National, regional and chapter structures in Military OS

Military OS is being extended to reflect national, regional, state and local structures, with separate decisions about member affiliation, officer responsibilities and access.

An association's organisation chart carries decisions about where members belong, who represents them and which officers oversee local work. Adding a regional or state layer also introduces another boundary for responsibility and access.

Military OS is being extended so an association can define the levels it uses and how they connect. Examples include:

  • National → Region → State → Chapter
  • National → District → Branch
  • Association → Chapter
Examples of association structures. Administration for these additional levels is in development.

A local chapter connects a member to the wider association

A member might belong to a chapter in Oregon. That chapter sits within a state organisation, which belongs to a western region and then the national association. The chapter's position connects the member to those wider groups without requiring a separate membership at every level.

Each association can have its own agreed structure. A National Executive Committee can remain its governing body, while regions, states and chapters describe how local units are organised.

Leadership and access are separate decisions

A regional officer may coordinate several chapters. A chapter officer may only need their own chapter's records. The title alone should not determine who can open private member information.

Military OS keeps a person's affiliation, their leadership appointment and their administrative access separate. Association leaders can consider each responsibility and its access boundary explicitly, including when someone holds more than one role.

A chapter transfer also changes local responsibility

Moving a member to another chapter can affect an office they hold and the records they are allowed to manage. Their earlier service still needs to remain on record.

The completed work on Military OS preserves that history, ends applicable appointments in the previous home chapter and withdraws access assigned specifically to that chapter. Access held elsewhere remains unchanged. Conflicting upcoming appointments must be resolved before the transfer can proceed.

For an association considering this structure, a useful starting point is to map its levels, officer responsibilities and access boundaries together. An organisation chart identifies the units; those decisions establish how authority works between them.

Development status: The new structures and member-transfer rules have been built and tested. The current administration screens still use chapters; screens for regional and state administration are in development.
